Sandyport Residents Find Comfort in Their Community During Times of Social Distancing

Jacqueline Lightbourn, Estate Agent with Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty

When The Bahamas issued a mandatory shelter-in-place order in March, I anticipated that social distancing would make me feel isolated and lonely. However, living in Sandyport  I have found the opposite to be true. Instead of feeling cut off from my neighbors, the sense of community here has never been stronger. As I’ve ventured outdoors during allowable hours to grab some fresh air, sunshine and exercise, I have witnessed kindness, sharing, laughter, support and acts of charity all of which has made me grateful to be quarantined in this live-work-play community.

Sandyport’s open space, calm canals and two-mile paved loop offers a variety of options for exercising outdoors safely and within the boundaries of the community, from paddle boarding and biking to walking and running. Residents cross to the other side of the road when approaching a neighbor to maintain social distancing, but even from behind their masks, you can hear a faint “Good Morning” or “Hello” as you cross paths.  Tennis courts, swimming pools, children’s playgrounds, a batting cage and a basketball court are also available for use as a group for those who live in the same household.

Homemade signs of encouragement and thanks for healthcare workers adorn the windows of many homes in our neighbourhood, and on weekends it’s not uncommon to hear families whistling, clapping and banging pots in honour of the fearless heroes working on the front lines of the COVID-19 fight. On front porches you’ll find children’s toys and games available for exchange or purchase, and we had an animal-spotting scavenger hunt where residents placed stuffed animals around their properties for children to “discover.”  I have even purchased homemade honey from a neighbor for my morning tea, and a thyme tree from another for use in my lemon garlic chicken.

Our community WhatsApp group has never been more active. Through this chat, neighbours share yeast or sugar for baking treats, offer to pick up food for the elderly and homebound, track deliveries for each other, or simply post uplifting thoughts and messages.

By far, the best part is being a part of the generosity of this community. Every week two families collect newspapers for the Bahamas Humane Society and there is a resident who collected t-shirts and bedsheets and created masks for the healthcare workers. On a community level, enough money was raised in a single day to provide donations to Lend a Hand Bahamas for Bain and Grants town, as well as gifts for our security and staff as a token of thanks for keeping our neighbourhood safe during lockdown and curfew.

I moved to Sandyport in 2002, and I have never been happier to have chosen this as my home. I am grateful to live in such a great community and to be surrounded by the kindness and support of the Sandyport residents.

DAMIANOS SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY ANNOUNCES TOP AGENTS FOR 2019

NASSAU, The Bahamas (Jan. 8, 2020) — George Damianos, Chief Executive Officer for Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty, and Lana Rademaker, Chief Brokerage Officer, are pleased to announce the company’s top agents for 2019.

Nick Damianos was the company’s overall Top Producing Sales Agent, breaking a company record for total dollar volume of sales for the 5th year in a row. Jonathan Morris earned the title of Top Producer in the Eleuthera market while Jane Patterson was awarded Top Producer in Abaco.

“In 2015 Nick shattered our company record for sales volume in a single year,” Rademaker said. “In each consecutive year since then, he has broken his own record.  His success is a testament to the hard work and long hours he puts in.  Nick’s diligence and knowledge have paid off year after year with his main focus consistently remaining to build lasting relationships with his clients.”

Rademaker added that in addition to recognizing Jane Patterson as Top Producer in Abaco for her sales achievements, she is proud of the entire Abaco sales team, considering all that they have been through both personally and professionally in the wake of Hurricane Dorian.

“Our Abaco team has been an inspiration to all of us,” Rademaker said. “Despite their lives being turned upside down overnight by Hurricane Dorian, their attitudes have remained positive and their spirits strong. It is truly a gift to have every one of them on our team, and we look forward to more and more rebuilding for the Abacos in 2020.”

As Abaco continues to focus on recovery and restoration for the foreseeable future, a considerable number of buyers are exploring the Eleuthera market for their second home purchases.

“While each group of islands in The Bahamas has its own distinct personality and identity, we’re finding that mainland Eleuthera, particularly the areas of Gregory Town, Current and Rainbow Bay is appealing to people who may have originally been looking to purchase a vacation home in Abaco,” said Jonathan Morris, 2019 Top Producer for Eleuthera.  “Similar to the Abaco Cays, mainland Eleuthera is easily accessible from the U.S. and offers an abundance of pristine beaches. We’re seeing a growing interest in Eleuthera as home buyers explore new markets in The Bahamas to invest in.”

Based on the rate of second and third home sales in 2019, Rademaker added that the vacation home market throughout The Bahamas should remain strong and steady throughout 2020.

“As we look toward celebrating our 75th anniversary this year, the entire Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty team remains dedicated to being the top professionals in all of our markets,” she said.

Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty Sponsors Run and Ride for Hope for The Seventh Year

NASSAU, The Bahamas (Feb. 6, 2019) — On Saturday, March 9, 2019, cyclists from around the country will descend upon Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera, to participate in Run and Ride for Hope with one goal in mind: eradicate cancer in The Bahamas.

The annual fundraiser offers outdoor enthusiasts the opportunity to bike 100 miles around the stunningly beautiful island of Eleuthera, all while raising money to assist Bahamians in the fight against cancer.

“The distance you ride is entirely your choice. Every participant has a highly personalized journey,” said Lana Rademaker, Chief Brokerage Officer for Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty. “Not only is this an important fundraiser in terms of raising money to help those suffering from cancer, but it’s an excellent opportunity for families to participate in a meaningful event together. Several of our team members will be running or biking with their families.”

Since launching 13 years ago, the event has raised more than $3,000,000 through the generosity of individual and corporate sponsorships. This year marks the seventh year that Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty has been a sponsor of Ride for Hope and the fourth year that the company has contributed $10,000 as a Yellow Jersey Corporate Sponsor.

Donations raised by the run and bike-a-thon support the Treatment Assistance Fund which helps cancer patients with their treatment costs through financial grants. Donations also contribute to programs such as the Cancer Society’s nationwide Cancer Education Program, a grassroots outreach effort that sends trained nurses to communities throughout The Bahamas to educate, raise awareness, and teach self-screening and good health choices.

“Cancer has directly touched the lives of everyone in our company, whether personally or through a loved one’s battle,” Rademaker said. “The support of this cause is something that’s very close to our hearts. We’re so proud that so many members of our team will be able to participate this year, and we’re honored to offer all of the support that we can.”

Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty Improves Website to Include 4K Video Technology

Better Quality Video, Better Buyer Experience. Also known as Ultra High Definition, 4K resolution offers better quality video at a higher resolution. This higher resolution is particularly beneficial for industries such as real estate because it allows potential buyers to experience the finer details of a home in sharper clarity when viewing property videos.

NASSAU, The Bahamas (Aug. 23, 2018) — Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty today announced that its website, SIRbahamas.com, now supports 4K video on its property detail pages, a feature that will be rolled out through the entirety of the website over the next few months.

“4K video is the new benchmark for both recording and watching video and it brings a whole host of benefits to our clients,” said Lana Rademaker, Chief Sales Officer for Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty. “This technology presents our exclusive listings in the highest resolution possible, bringing all aspects of a home to life in a way that allows potential buyers to experience the home’s true beauty and value simply by viewing a property video.”

The display on 4K video is so clear that it’s virtually impossible for a viewer to see pixels. When combined with faster screen refresh rates, 4K has the potential to deliver almost as much depth as 3D—without the need for glasses.

“With the level of clarity that 4K video provides, it’s really the next best thing to touring the property in-person,” Rademaker said.

This is particularly important when it comes to the luxury real estate market in The Bahamas since many potential buyers are viewing properties from afar.

“As a company with extensive global reach, we are committed to taking advantage of every tool we can to ensure that the buyer experience is as satisfying and as seamless as possible,” Rademaker said. “Whether that buyer is viewing our website locally or from 3,000 miles away.”

Harbour Island Living – The Secret Gem of The Bahamas

There is an island that is so exclusive, so pristine, and so unique, that the residents don’t want you to know too much about it. As with all good things, however, word is getting out that Harbour Island is the true gem of The Bahamas. Harbour Island, fondly known as “Briland” by locals and those in the know, has somewhat reluctantly ended up in the luxury travel spotlight, and with good reason. This wee little island has more character and easygoing glamour in its five-square-mile footprint than most world famous island destinations.

This peaceful island, located off the northeastern tip of Eleuthera, boasts great history, privacy from vacation crowds, and natural beauty. From the moment one steps foot on this beautiful Bahamian isle, there is a sense of calm and relaxation. While Harbour Island may be charmingly rustic (golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation), it is also home to luxurious five star resorts, dining, and a plethora of island adventure. Notables, including royalty and celebrities, live quietly among the friendly locals on this little island. Here, dirt paths lead to stunning estates – this is not South Beach or the Riviera and “Brilanders” want to keep it this way.

One of the more recognizable faces on the island is that of India Hicks, daughter of designer David Hicks, bridesmaid to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, and a distant heir to the throne. Just take a look at her photo stream on Instagram to get a peak into her beachy, yet sophisticated life on the island. She once made the mistake of suggesting Harbour Island was on its the way to becoming the next St Barths and has been making up for it ever since. Hicks is now one of the first to stand guard of the island’s authentic old Bahamian feel. Other famous residents and frequent visitors include Elle Macpherson, Diane von Furstenberg, Tyra Banks, Mick Jagger, and Zac Posen.

Harbour Island is only 3.5 miles long by 1.5 miles wide and has a year round population of 2000. Although it is a tiny locale, it is big on history. The island and nearby Eleuthera were originally settled by the Lucayan Indians until the 1500s. In 1648, the “Eleutheran Adventurers” inhabited the island and named it for its excellent harbour. Dunmore Town, the first and only town on Harbour Island, is named after Lord Dunmore, the Fourth Earl of Dunmore. Dunmore Town is best known historically for its shipbuilding, sugar refining, and hiding liquor during prohibition. A charming village, Dunmore still has the quaint New England architecture and colonial style clapboard houses. It was not until the 1950s that Harbour Island began to be known as a vacation destination in certain exclusive crowds.

From conch shacks to fish fries and its enchanting historic town, Harbour Island is begging to be explored. Harbour Island is probably most famous as a yachting destination with its illustrious Pink Sand Beach, which is protected by the world’s third longest barrier reef. Its waters are crystal clear and the pink sand gets its hue from microscopic bits of coral and shells, making for some of the most stunning ocean vistas in the world. The island is home to some of the best bone fishing and diving, and it has many charming boutiques selling local wares. Harbour Island is also the perfect launch point to go on an island hopping excursion by boat and see some of the other beautiful Out Islands of The Bahamas. No matter what you do in Harbour Island, whether it’s a day on the water or a day spent lounging on the beach under the swaying palms, a day isn’t complete without a little “sip sip” (the local term for gossip and a drink).

Harbour Island is not to be compared to other islands because it is what other islands strive to be. It is laid back, tropical, and elegant. It is the place where you can stay in a boutique five star hotel, go swimming, and spear your own fish for dinner. Should you have to leave this captivating and magical island (and you won’t want to), you will leave with the sand between your toes.

The news is getting out and Harbour Island is on all the best tropical destination lists including those by Travel + Leisure, Frommer’s, and Forbes. So, how to get there? It is a trip best suited to the more patient travelers. The North Eleuthera Airport is accessed only by direct flights from Nassau, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale. From the airport, take a taxi to the dock and then take another taxi, albeit a water taxi, across the bay to beautiful Harbour Island. There is also a daily fast ferry from Nassau.

Refined Décor, Seclusion and Miles of Powdery Beach are Putting Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty’s Exclusively Listed Guanahani Beach Villas – and San Salvador – on the Map

Ultimate luxury in a relaxed, reclusive atmosphere. Located about 200 miles southeast of Nassau, Guanahani Beach Villas sit on 1.5 miles of powdery sand on the southeast coast of San Salvador in The Bahamas. Exclusively listed by Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty and featured on the cover of the 2018 summer issue of RESIDE Bahamas, the elegant resort offers the best of both worlds – luxurious imported finishes and refined décor in a laidback setting ideal for the adventure seeker.

San Salvador, The Bahamas (August 14, 2018)— Ten years ago, Carlo and Elena Sparta set off on a quest to find a place that was remote enough to feel secluded, but accessible enough not to intimidate savvy travelers.

They didn’t know exactly where they’d end up, they just knew they’d know when they found it. After embarking on a globe-trotting odyssey that took them to some of the world’s most spectacular locations in Australia, South Africa, Mexico, Baja California and Brazil, their search ended the moment they felt the powdery white sand sift between their toes as they walked along Snow Bay Beach in San Salvador, The Bahamas.

“It was love at first sight,” said Elena Sparta who now owns and operates Guanahani Beach Villas on that very beach. “The bay is breath taking; the colours of the water change several times a day. We knew almost immediately that this was the ideal place for us.”

Nestled on the sand just steps from Pigeon Creek and Snow Bay National Park on the southeast end of San Salvador, Guanahani Beach Villas offer guests three one-bedroom villas and a two-bedroom villa all of which feature elegant touches such as oak wood flooring, crisp white walls, teak furniture, Hansgrohe faucets, Bassini shower heads, Pozzi Ginori ceramics and white mosaic Bisazza shower tiles.

“Using white as the dominant colour was not only a question of taste, but a deliberate choice to ensure that the villas were in harmony with the colours of the sea and the beauty of the nature that surrounds Guanahani,” said Sparta.

Aesthetically driven, these features are what sets Guanahani Beach Villas apart and make it unique in the resort landscape of The Bahamas.

“The European styling combined with the best of The Bahamas beachfront allow for the perfect marriage of European design and Caribbean charm,” said Vanessa Pritchard-Ansell, the Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty Real Estate agent who is exclusively representing the property.

And it’s not just the décor that nurtures a sense of accord throughout Guanahani Villas. With cement roofs and walls and double-glazed hurricane-impact windows on every building, the property is built to weather storms, offering peace of mind for future owners and visitors.

Additionally, louvred doors and windows take full advantage of the trade winds which flow consistently and steadily over San Salvador November through May making the island a dream destination for sailing, kitesurfing and windsurfing. The waters surrounding San Salvador reach as deep as 4,000 meters, attracting divers, snorkelers and fishermen from around the world, particularly from the French and European markets.  To serve this ever-growing tourism market, Air Caraibes has increased its airlift with direct flights from Paris to San Salvador every Thursday. The island is also served by direct daily flights from Nassau on American Airlines and BahamasAir , weekly flights from the U.S. and two flights a week from Canada.

Another unique aspect of Guanahani Villas is the ability it grants future owners to establish their own design imprint on the island with the availability of vacant land directly adjacent to the resort.

“The 12,647 sq. ft vacant lot included in the asking price, as well as the surrounding vacant lots available for sale, offer the perfect blank canvas for a developer to project their own vision, or on which they can continue the space-saving architectural style and interior design footprint.”

Getting to Know The Bahamas Islands

Welcome to The Bahamas Islands. The Bahamas, or the Commonwealth of The Bahamas as its formally known, is an archipelago consisting of 700 islands and cays in the Atlantic Ocean. Some of the most well-known Bahamas islands are New Providence (Nassau and Paradise Island), Abaco, Andros, Exuma and Eleuthera.

Cerulean waters, tranquil breezes and some of the most pristine beaches in the world are characteristics many would use to describe the beautiful Bahamas islands. While these natural amenities are among the top reasons people cite for traveling or moving to The Bahamas, these are only a few of the wonders that you’ll find when island-hopping or when looking for the ideal location for buying a second home or investment property in The Bahamas. Below we’ve taken a moment to outline some of the larger Bahamas islands, and offer some of our personal tips on what makes each island so unique and special.

New Providence

Home to Nassau and Paradise Island, New Providence is probably the most well-known of the Bahamas islands and cays. As the island where the majority of the population of The Bahamas resides, New Providence is a popular stop for cruise ships and a vacation destination for tourists looking to explore world-renowned luxury resorts such as Atlantis, Baha Mar and The Ocean Club. In addition to being home to some of the most high-end hotels and private luxury real estate in the country, Nassau is famous for its immaculate beaches, its offshore coral reefs, its world-class diving and snorkeling and historical landmarks like The Queen’s Staircase, Fort Charlotte and Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation.

The Abacos

Known as a boating and sailing paradise, the Abacos are approximately 80 miles east of South Florida. Making up the 120-mile-long chain of islands are top boating and fishing destinations like Great Abaco and Little AbacoWalker’s Cay (and its sister island Grand Cay);  Spanish Cay and Green Turtle Cay, with its settlement of New Plymouth; Great Guana Cay, private Scotland Cay, Man-O-War Cay, and Elbow Cay, with its settlement of Hope Town; and, Tilloo Cay and Lubbers Quarters. In addition to boating and fishing, Abaco offers championship golfing at The Abaco Club at Winding Bay Bahama Beach Club in Treasure Cay and Baker’s Bay Golf & Ocean Club on Guana Cay, as well as some of the best snorkeling and diving among the The Bahamas islands.

Andros

The largest of The Bahamas islands, Andros has an area greater than all other 700 Bahamas islands combined and is among the least explored islands of The Bahamas. Its population of just 10,000 spread across 2,300 square miles of tropical foliage, mahogany and pine forests, and lush mangroves means guests of luxury resorts such as Kamalame Cay are treated to some of the most unspoiled beaches and waters the country has to offer. The Great Andros Barrier Reef , measuring 190 miles, is the third largest fringing barrier reef in the world. It drops to about eight feet on the island side and approximately 6,000 feet in the Tongue of the Ocean.

Exuma Cays

Perhaps best known to tourists as the Bahamas island chain that is home to Pig Beach and the famous swimming pigs, the Exumas form a 90-mile chain of  365 islands and cays, and also includes some of the globe’s most stunning luxury resorts like Grand Isle Resort and Spa on Grand Exuma, Lumina Point Resort & Spa on Stocking Island and Sandals Emerald Bay. In addition to luxury resorts, the Exumas offer some of the most stunning private property available on the real estate market including Blue IslandSampson Cay Saddleback Cay and Pipe Cay.

Eleuthera

Comprised of mainland Eleuthera, which includes Governors HarbourGregory Town and Palmetto Point and neighboring  Harbour Island and Spanish Wells, Eleuthera is possibly the most diverse of The Bahamas island chains. Its eastern side faces the Atlantic Ocean, and its western side faces the Great Bahama Bank, making for breathtaking natural wonders such as the spectacular The Glass Window Bridge and The Queen’s Bath. The topography of the island varies from wide rolling pink sand beaches to large outcrops of ancient coral reefs.
